Apprenticeship License: Not Required
Requirements to Take the Licensing Exam
Journeyman Electrician: Must have between four and six years of working experience as an electrical apprentice or trainee, with each municipality having its own standards.
Maintenance Electrician: Must have between four and six years of working experience as an electrical apprentice or trainee, with each municipality having its own standards. Maintenance electricians will specialize in journeyman level jobs and must be employed by a contractor to preserve their license.
Master Electrician: Must have between four and six years of working experience as a journeyman electrician.
Electrical Contractor: A contractor’s license is required for all work projects that exceed $10,000 in value, and prospective contractors must present a financial affidavit proving their business has a net worth of at least $10,000. They must also be a master electrician or have at least one in their employ.
