Licensed Categories for Electricians
Electrical Contractor Class I
Electrical Contractor Class II
Licenses Issued By: Georgia Board of Electrical Contractors
Apprenticeship License: Not required
Requirements to Take the Licensing Exam
Electrical Contractor Class I: Must have at least four years of practical, on-the-job experience as an electrical apprentice. Educational experience can be substituted for this requirement at a ratio of one-half (i.e., completing a two-year associate degree program would count as one year of experience). Class I contractors perform a full range of installation, maintenance and repair duties for single-phase electrical systems.
Electrical Contractor Class II: Must have at least four years of work experience as an electrical apprentice in an authorized apprenticeship program (and/or equivalent educational experience). The primary providers of electrical apprenticeships in Georgia include:
Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC), Atlanta and Georgia Chapters
International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local Union 13
Technical College System of Georgia (programs offer a mix of classroom work and direct apprenticeship experience)
Class II contractors are licensed to install, maintain and repair electrical systems of any size or characteristics, and consequently at least some of their apprenticeship experience must involve electrical work with systems above the single-phase, 200-ampere level.
